For the timing of workshops, 70% preferred morning meetings that included breakfast. Two hours was the preference of 72% for the length of workshops.

Eighty-three percent of respondents requested quarterly events as their preferred frequency. The most popular format for events was a speaker followed by a discussion (50%), with a speaker only being the second choice at 46%.

The topics of most interest to our membership were the 40-hour service requirement for high school students (60%), closely followed by the Canadian Code of Volunteer Involvement (55%). The preferred locations for events were Burlington or Oakville (tied at 68% rating). Almost 48% of members would be most willing to spend $15 to attend an event, followed by 26% willing to pay $30. Not only must they compete with existing charitable groups for the same pool of potential donors, they rarely possess the expertise or resources they need to attract and retain a sustainable funding base. Established charitable groups also endure times when their donor base has diminished and they experience severe challenges in replenishing it with new supporters. Perhaps the greatest challenge confronting all organizations is the arduous quest of finding contributors who are willing to support the area of funding that is the most difficult to address – operating!

Yet there are straight-forward and relatively simple strategies that start-up, emerging and even mature non-profit organizations can employ that would allow them to connect with cultivate relations with potential individual, corporate and institutional partners. By learning a variety of creative and useful approaches related to donor acquisition, workshop participants will realize that it is possible even for small volunteer-driven organizations to begin to build strong and committed legion of donors within a reasonable timeframe. Of greater significance, participants will learn techniques that will enable them to core support for years to come.

Among the lessons that participants will learn through this interactive session:

How to use special events and outreach activities as a means to acquire new donors;
How to identify an organization’s “constituents” and precisely who should be targeted as prospective donors;
How to make inroads  and generate support from the business and corporate sector, and;
The difference between donor and membership base.

DATE:              Friday, February 27th, 2009
TIME: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
LOCATION: St. Paul’s United Church, 123 Main Street East, Milton, Ontario
PRESENTER: Mike Paquet, Principal, People First Resource Development
TARGET AUDIENCE: Anyone Involved in Raising Funds for Small to Mid-sized Non-Profit Organizations.

During his 15-year career in fund development, Mike Paquet has helped several community-based and grassroots non-profit groups throughout Southern Ontario to implement long-term sustainable fundraising and resource development programs. On the other hand, many people are asked to take on the responsibility of managing volunteers without adequate time and training to do the job well. This link has been designed to assist both the experienced manager and the manager new to the position, by providing one-on-one peer support and assistance on a number of topics.

Scroll down and you will find a list of topics that are most common within the job descriptions of volunteer managers. Under each topic you will find a list of people who have volunteered to assist anyone with a question or problem in that specific area. Using the contact info provided, you then just contact them! It’s as easy as that.

We are always on the lookout for people who are willing to volunteer their time and expertise to assist their peers. If anyone has a new topic that they would like to see added, please contact me (Sharon Bee), and we’ll get it added to the site and recruit members who are willing to share knowledge in that area.

We have a great wealth of knowledge in the Halton AVA. This is one way to share it!
